CocoWalk Shares Redevelopment Plans, Renderings for Newly-Imagined Mall

COCONUT GROVE, Fla. – The white elephant of a mall known as CocoWalk is about to undergo a makeover.

The new ownership group of the Coconut Grove mall shared images of the redevelopment plans that they hope will energize a retail facility that has seen better days.

The Comras Company, one of the mall’s owners, wants to restore CocoWalk as a destination for dining, shopping and entertainment.

The makeover plans feature a mix of well-known brands on the retail side, while also bringing in more casual and sit-down restaurants.

A new open-air plaza in the middle of CocoWalk will feature cafe seating and landscaping that will mimic the surrounding neighborhood.

Built in 1990, CocoWalk has struggled over the last decade with poor retail traffic as South Florida shoppers tend to visit indoor malls due to the warm weather. As sales dropped, stores began to leave and vacancies piled up.

Renovations will begin this summer with a completion date expected in mid-2018.

Construction has already begun on the One Cocowalk project that will bring a 78,000 square-foot office building to the complex’s eastern section.
